Goal:
The goal of the course is to educate students about operating principles, design, theory and commissioning of electric motors.
Outcome:
After exam passed, students should be able to do erection, commissioning, testing, and maintenance of electric motors.
Contents of the course
Theoretical instruction:
- Introduction lecture (organization and content of the course). Basic terms.
- Basics of electromechanical conversion. Losses and power efficiency.
- Induction machines: Introduction, stator and rotor windings, electromotive force.
- Induction machines: magnetomotive force, electromagnetic field, the application, basic structural components, operating principle, and basic types.
- Induction machine: equivalent circuit, active power balance, torque characteristics, stability of operation.
- Induction machine: starting the machine.
- Induction machine: regulation of the rotational speed, higher-order harmonics.
- Induction machine: rotating transformers, single-phase asynchronous motors.
- Induction machine: the state-of-the-art designs.
- Commissioning of induction machines.
- Synchronous motors.
- Direct-current machines: application, basic structural components, operating principle.
- Direct-current machines: field and induct winding, basic equations, armature reaction and mitigation measures.
- DC-machines: commutation and measures for improvement, torque characteristics of the motor, speed control, universal motors.
- DC-machines: the state-of-the-art designs. Commissioning of DC machines.
Practical instruction (Problem solving sessions/Lab work/Practical training):
- Computational and laboratory exercises follow hours of lectures.
